A Round Table with Rep. Pramila Jayapal
Hey Vashon-Maury neighbors and business friends!
We just wrapped up an incredibly heartening Business Round Table with U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, and we wanted to share the highlights while the drinks were cold and the sun was shining. We gathered at Pop Pop Bottle Shop. Huge thanks to Adam Chumas for hosting us in such a great spot, and the room was filled with the exact kind of energy that makes our island home.
Special thanks are due to our Chamber President, Elijah Berry, whose hard work and coordination made this high-level meeting possible for our community.
It wasn't just a meeting; it was a conversation between friends. We had everyone from the Vashon Land Trust and Vashon Care Network to our local architects, yoga studios, builders, health insurance pros, and restaranteurs. The vibe was casual, low-key, and deeply grateful for the Rep’s tireless fight for human rights and equality.
The "Inside Scoop" for Your Business
Direct Lines to the County: One of the best outcomes was Rep. Jayapal’s offer to help us bridge the gap between our island and the mainland. She has already connected our Board President with Girmay Zahilay, our new King County representative. She’s encouraging us to get him over here for a similar round table soon so we can tackle those "King County headaches" like ferry reliability and permitting together.
Healthcare & Your Wallet: We spent some time discussing her Medicare for All Act. Rep. Jayapal expressed great optimism for the bill's future, highlighting its goal to provide comprehensive healthcare as a right. For those balancing the rising costs of private insurance, she mentioned a tool to help individuals and families estimate personal savings. You can find that interactive tool atcalculator.passmedicareforall.org.
The Snowpack & Summer Shifts: We had a real talk about the low mountain snowpack this year. While we’re all a bit nervous about what that means for fire risk and tourism, there was a beautiful silver lining: our local business owners noted that when travel gets tricky, we often see a surge in "local tourism" from folks discovering the magic of Vashon for the first time.
A Federal Friend: Rep. Jayapal reminded us that she’s a "long-time friend" of the island. Her office has resources specifically designed to help us navigate the federal side of things when the red tape gets too thick.
Building a Stronger Island Together
This event is a key piece of our 2026 "Bridge Year". We are working hard to ensure the Chamber provides tangible value to every business—whether you have a storefront in the heart of Uptown, work in the trades, or run a service business from your home office.
We’re keeping things steady, keeping the dialogue open, and making sure Vashon has a seat at the table.
Our goal is to serve you with the guidance and direction of our membership. As we prepare for the May Business Pulse, we want to hear the latest on your successes and hurdles.
