Vashon Community Van

A shared, community-centered transportation option offered by King County Metro in partnership with the Vashon-Maury Island Chamber of Commerce.

Reserve a Van

Overview

The Vashon Community Van program, offered by King County Metro in partnership with the Vashon-Maury Island Chamber of Commerce, provides shared vans that accommodate groups of up to 12 people. The vans support community trips of all kinds and offer a flexible, low-cost transportation option for group outings on or off the island.

Getting started is simple: begin the volunteer driver approval process, which includes a short application, an in-person training, and an online orientation. The process is free and typically takes a few weeks to complete. Once you're approved, you can reserve a van for your group.

Key Program Features

  • A community-centered transportation option offered by King County Metro in partnership with the Vashon-Maury Island Chamber of Commerce

  • Low-cost travel: passengers pay the price of a one-way Metro bus ticket; the approved driver rides free

  • Each trip must include at least two passengers plus an approved volunteer driver

  • Use the van for group outings such as events, errands, appointments, recreational activities, and other trips on or off the island

  • Gas, insurance, road and bridge tolls, and a Discover Pass included

  • Priority ferry loading and free ferry fare for the van and approved driver at designated terminals (passenger ferry fares are additional and paid separately to WSF at the time of crossing)

  • Available day or night (no overnights), including use within approximately a two-hour driving radius

  • Accessible van available (1 wheelchair user + 4 additional passengers + driver)

How Does it Work?

Anyone can submit a request for a van, but each trip must have an approved volunteer driver.

1. Submit a Request
Use the Vashon Community Van Request Form to submit your trip request.
Please submit your request at least two business days before your trip so we can review the details, confirm availability, and coordinate any ferry requirements.
If you have flexibility with dates or van sizes, you can note that in the form.

2. Your Request Is Reviewed
Requests are reviewed in the order they’re received. Trips must meet King County Metro guidelines and include at least two passengers plus the approved driver.

3. Scheduling & Confirmation
If a van is available, we’ll confirm your reservation and finalize any details with you.
If a van is not available, you’ll be placed on the waitlist automatically and notified.

4. Enjoy the Trip
Your approved volunteer driver will take your group to the planned destination and help ensure the trip goes smoothly.

Become an Approved Driver

Volunteer drivers make the Community Van program possible. The approval process is free and includes a short application, an in-person training, and an online orientation. The process typically takes a few weeks to complete.

1. Apply Online
Start by completing the Volunteer Driver Application. This initiates the driver application process. Drivers must be 21 or older and hold a valid Washington State driver’s license.
For a full list of eligibility requirements, visit the King County Metro Community Van website.

2. Application Processing & Next Steps
King County Metro processes your application and contacts you with next steps.
If everything is in order, this will include attending an in-person training hosted at the Vashon-Maury Island Chamber of Commerce. The training is approximately two hours and covers program guidelines, driver responsibilities, how to use accessible equipment, and more.

3. Online Orientation
After the in-person training, you’ll receive a link to a short online orientation that you complete independently. Once finished, you’ll be approved to drive a King County Community Van.

4. Start Driving
After approval, you can begin driving Community Vans on or off-island.
